The Red, White, and Blue Contest
In order to encourage patients to be the very best orthodontic patient that they can be, we have weekly, monthly, and quarterly drawings for prizes. Prizes have included Flat Screen TV's, PSP's, X-Boxes, DVD Players, I-Pods and more! Patients enter the contest at each visit by receiving either a red, white, or blue ticket. Tickets are awarded based on cooperation as explained below in the rules.
The Contest Goal: Excellent Patient Cooperation
Successful orthodontic treatment requires close cooperation between the patient, parents, the family dentist, and our office. What is successful orthodontic treatment? More than just an awesome smile and a proper fit of the teeth, successful orthodontic treatment occurs efficiently to reduce possible damage to the teeth and gums. Perhaps the biggest challenge is involving each patient in their orthodontic treatment. With our contest, we hope to encourage excellence in three critical cooperation areas:
- Regular and timely attendance at appointments
- Avoiding damaging the orthodontic appliances
- Keeping plaque free to avoid damage to the teeth and gums
Making appointments as scheduled is important to avoid lengthening treatment time unnecessarily. Problems associated with missed appointments include not being reactivated to continue making timely progress, over-activation necessitating backtracking, and accumulated damaged that wouldn't of been significant if the braces had come off six months earlier on time. Out of consideration to other patients scheduled that day, it may not be possible to achieve all appointment objectives that day for late arriving patients, possibly lengthening treatment overall.
Broken or loose braces happen, especially in the first few months of treatment as patients adjust to the braces. The majority of breakage, however, is avoidable. So be careful and stay from hard to chew foods! We ask that a patient call and give us a "heads up" if they suspect a problem. This will improve the odds that we can fix it at the next appointment to stay on track. In deciding what we can fix and when, we consider how critical it is to fix immediately as well as whether we will unfairly spill over into someone else's appointment time and possibly effect their treatment.
The biggest disappointment for us is to remove the braces only to find damaged enamel or even cavities. This is preventable! In fact, improving oral hygiene practice wide was the inspiration for our contest. Besides damage, it is more difficult for us to efficiently and accurately move the teeth. So some tips for improved hygiene follow:
- Sonicare or Oral-B/Braun toothbrush.
- Floss at least every other day.
- Fluoride mouth rinses.
- Cut out sugary foods and drinks, or at the very least rinse with water after consuming sugary items.
- Parental inspection.
- See your dentist more often.
